MAKE YOUR DREAM REAL AND YOU SUCCESSFUL
- Are you 18 years old or younger?
- Do you have a dream of what you want to become when you complete your formal schooling?
- Are you passionate about what your dream is all about?
- Does your dream open the door for you to become a successful entrepreneur, to become the owner of your own business and in the process make good money as well?
Tell you what, let’s put the focus on that dream of yours. The exciting part for me is that you could start living your dream right now.
So let’s get started!
You are now embarking on a journey, the results of which will last you a life-time. We will be walking this road together taking it step by step. It’s like learning to ride a bicycle. At first there will be a hand keeping you upright, helping to keep all the trees out of your way . Soon that hand will draw away and you will find yourself in full control of your bicycle.
VISION
What do you have in mind to accomplish – what are you dreaming about. I want to encourage you to dream BIG . Have you written your dream down – get a pen and paper and do so. As soon as you have done that then, with all the further details you are going to fill in, a clearer picture of the journey ahead will emerge. We will be looking at goals which will have to be met as well as steps to be taken to get your dream moving forward.
Remember there are two sides to a coin – the ons side is called think and dream big, the other side is called think and be realistic. You have to think and act in a realistic way. It is of utmost importance that you will learn how to plan properly and for that to happen we have to get the plan of your Teen Business down on paper. Things will become more and more exciting as we talk about items such as a timetable to get things done or ideas about how you are going to market your business. There are so much more to talk about but we will get to all of that in good time.
Have you spoken to your parents about your dream, if not now may be a good time to do so. You can talk to other relatives or good friends if necessary, or a teacher at school can also be a good listener and offer sound advice. A word of warning—do not be put off when somebody criticizes your business idea saying “are you crazy” or “it’s a crazy idea” or “ it will never work” or worst of all ”you are not capable of doing this”. Do not allow negative thoughts to break down your dream. Do not let anybody tell you it is not possible.
YOU CAN DO IT IF YOU REALLY WANT TO.
Stick to the golden rule and plan, establish and drive your business dream in a realistic manner and adjust where necessary.
Do not allow fear to get the better of you. You could be afraid of the unknown, fear for failure, rejection or fear for making a fool of yourself. Please do not allow these things to destroy your dream. You know what, the best way to begin this journey is by taking small steps at a time. Somebody once asked me ”do you think you can eat an elephant?” Before I could answer the person told me ”yes you can, small bits at a time.”
The most important part of getting your dream off the ground and working towards success is to get started. A teacher of mine used to tell us ”stop talking and get started”. So, the best time to start is right now. Never try to “go it alone”. Help is available. It’s far easier to get somebody with a good knowledge of business to assist and coach you, offer you great advice and help guide your actions in the right direction. Let me illustrate this with the following story.
ENOUGH FOR ALL OF US
My name is Emily. I am 12 years old. We stay in a small town in a rural area of our country. We have had a drought for nearly four years during which time we had very little rain. The earth became very dry and many trees and other plants died because of that. Now the rain has returned. Our school also suffered. The trees around the school were all dead as well. It did not look nice with only the school building standing there.
At home I watched my father plant new trees around our house. Most of them were fruit trees. He also started a small vegetable garden. I enjoyed helping him and also learnt what and how to do the work. This really made me excited and I started dreaming of a beautiful vegetable garden with enough food for all the people in town.
Little did I know how quickly my dream was to become a reality. One afternoon our school principal, mr. Jones, came over to our house to see what my father had done with our garden. He wanted to do something like ours at his house as well. When he and my farther walked outside to view our garden, I went along. As we walked around I got all my courage together and asked mr. Jones, “ Sir, can we also plant trees at our school and maybe also start a small vegetable garden?” Mr Jones stopped walking and for a few seconds looked at me in total amazement. Then he said, “ Come to my office tomorrow and tell me all about your plans.” I was so excited ! All I could say was “ Yes sir!”
The next morning I stood in front of his office waiting to speak to him. “Sir I have a plan that we can use to develop our school ground.” Mr Jones looked at me and said, “tell me more.” Sir, we must plant trees just as what my fathers did at our house . Trees look beautiful and provide shade for the children to play and sit in. I think we should plant some fruit trees as well – figtrees grow easily. Maybe we should plant some peach and apricot trees as well. We can eat the fruit or even cook jam from it -my mother knows how to do it and will help us. We can even sell our products and with that money develop the grounds further.
Mr Jones sat quietly listening to me. I continued ”Sir we must also plant some vegetables, enough for all of us. I know of children, some are my friends, who do not have enough food to eat and this can help.”
Mr Jones then replied. “ Emily, I want you to be part of a committee to investigate everything you have told me and come up with a plan of action how to get it done and keep it going. I attended all the meetings. We put our plan of action together, had it typed and added a sketch of how the whole area was planned.
This made it easy for everybody to understand what was going to happen. We then had a meeting where the whole community was invited to attend. By this time I was really excited because my dream was on the point of becoming a reality. The meeting was a great success. People, including the pupils, volunteerd to become involved. Six months later our school grounds looked like a small farm. One morning a car stopped at the school and two men came to see mr. Jones. I was called in to be present. The two men were from a large company doing business in agriculture. I had to explain how my dream came true and what we wanted to do in the future. The company was so impressed with what was happening that they offered to donate a shade cloth greenhouse tunnel in which we could grow our own seedlings from seed they were prepared to sponsor.
A year ago I finished my school career. I am now working and studying part time to get my degree. Guess what, I am still part of that committee where it all started and hope to make a contribution for as long as possible.
